About

Skate Nelson is a non-profit group of skateboarders, friends, and concerned citizens uniting to create a first-rate community skatepark where both the youth and adults of the region can enjoy the sport in a safe, legal, and exhilarating way. Skateboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. It has surpassed football and baseball as the healthy activity of choice. Skateboarding is extremely popular with kids, but not all skateboarders are young. More and more old boarders are rediscovering the favorite pastime of their youth.

Nelson County, Virginia, is a beautiful rural county in the central part of the state located between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. AirIt boasts excellent quality of life and natural beauty. It does not, however, have good options for its skateboarding residents. Most streets are too roughly paved to ride on. There are virtually no sidewalks. The majority of residents have gravel driveways. The schools forbid skating on their nicely paved parking lots. There are no skateparks, public or commercial, in Nelson county, and the nearest skateparks are about 30 miles away.

Skate Nelson wants to help. This group, established in March 2008, will demonstrate community interest by recruiting members and supporters, soliciting funding, appraising prospective sites, facilitating planning, and succeeding in building a quality skatepark in our Nelson County. This is important to the kids who need a fun skate venue . It’s important for the community who want a legal and safe place for its skating residents. The completed skatepark will be source for community pride and a community asset which will raise the quality of life. Finally, as a community project, the skatepark is “do-able.” Succeeding will bring together public and private initiative, and sweat-equity from citizens. It will give the youth of the county a tangible lesson: With hard work and determination, anything is possible.

The more people we have, the faster the facility will be built and the better the facility will be. We need skaters, wanna-be skaters, parents, grandparents, business owners, and people concerned with the health and happiness of our youth. We’ll contact you about meetings and other opportunities to further the success of our community skatepark.
