Meeting with Parks and Rec…

Today I met with Emily and Gary at the Nelson County Parks and Recreation Department (NCPRD). My intention was to find out if there was any history of people trying to start a skatepark in the county, if there was interest from NCPRD, if there was opposition to a skatepark, that sort of thing. Turns out that Parks and Rec. agrees with the need for a skatepark, and they seem willing to help in anyway they can… except with funding. As we all know, times are hard, and the county does not have extra tax dollars right now. It was great though that I really didn’t have to “sell” the skatepark concept. They get it! We agreed that the site at the Rockfish Community Center(RCC) seemed pretty ideal, but there may be obstacles to using that site, too. Next, I’ll try to speak with someone on the RCC Board to get a sense of their opinion on the project. After that, I think we’re ready to have a sit down meeting and make a clear plan of action.

That sounds like progress to me, and it’s awesome to see that so much of an initiative is being taken on this project. Back to funding, I checked the Tony Hawk Skatepark Foundation website and we apparently have missed the deadline for summer grants (not for winter grants though). Our project really did seem to fit the criteria for a donation, but unless they are willing to make an exception about the deadline we may have to take on most of the brunt of fundraising ourselves.

  5. YEAHHHHHH, Thats awesome!

  6. Just another reason why I wish I lived in Nelson County. Really. Thanks for taking the time to meet with the NCPRD and thanks to Emily and Gary for taking this project seriously.

  7. it would be awesome if the tony hawk foundation gave us a little bit of leeway on the deadline…..we would be pretty much set for funding then.
